TL;DR

Topical Authority Map Builder is a free AI skill for search & content growth. Turns a niche, seed keyword, or existing content inventory into a full topical authority map — pillar pages, supporting clusters, search intent, internal linking, and a publishing order. It works with Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and is ready to use out of the box.

About this skill

Ranking on a single keyword rarely works anymore; search engines reward sites that demonstrate depth across an entire topic. This skill takes a niche, a seed keyword list, or an existing content inventory and builds a structured topical map: a pillar page per core topic, the supporting cluster articles beneath it, the search intent behind each (informational, commercial, transactional), a recommended internal linking structure connecting them, and a realistic publishing order so the site builds authority in a coherent sequence instead of a scattered pile of unrelated posts.

What it does

Given a niche or seed keywords, the skill identifies core pillar topics, breaks each into supporting cluster subtopics with the search intent behind each one, proposes an internal linking structure connecting clusters back to their pillar and to each other where relevant, and sequences a publishing order that builds topical depth early rather than spreading thin across unrelated topics.

What is included

  • Full SKILL.md with the pillar/cluster identification method
  • Search intent classification guide (informational, commercial, transactional, navigational) applied per cluster topic
  • Internal linking structure template connecting clusters to pillars and to each other
  • Publishing sequence logic: which pillar to build out first and why
  • Worked example: turning a single niche into a full topical map with pillars and clusters

How to use it

1. Download the topical-authority-map-builder-SKILL.md file
2. Upload it in a Claude or ChatGPT chat, or add to your skills folder
3. Provide a niche, seed keyword list, or an existing list of published content
4. Review the resulting pillar/cluster map, intent labels, linking plan, and suggested publishing order

Examples

Example input
Build a topical authority map for a site about home espresso brewing, aimed at beginners upgrading from pre-ground coffee.
Example output
Three pillar topics identified: Espresso Machines for Beginners, Grinding & Bean Selection, and Dialing In Your Shot. Under 'Grinding & Bean Selection,' supporting clusters include: burr vs blade grinders (commercial intent), grind size by brew method (informational), how long ground beans stay fresh (informational), and best entry-level grinders under $200 (commercial). Each cluster links back to its pillar and sideways to directly related clusters. Suggested order: build out 'Espresso Machines for Beginners' first since it captures the highest-intent, closest-to-purchase readers, then expand into the other two pillars.

FAQ

Do I need existing content, or can I start from nothing?
Either works. Starting from nothing, it builds the full map from a niche or seed keywords. With an existing content inventory, it maps what you have onto pillars/clusters and flags the gaps.
How many pillar topics does it typically suggest?
Usually 2-5 for a focused niche site — enough to show real depth without spreading a small site too thin across unrelated pillars.
Does it do keyword volume or difficulty research?
No — it structures topics and intent based on reasoning about the niche, not live search volume data. Pair it with a keyword research tool for volume/difficulty numbers, then feed those back in to refine the map.
What does the internal linking plan actually specify?
Which cluster pages should link up to their pillar, and which clusters are closely related enough to link sideways to each other — not exact anchor text, which depends on the final page copy.
Why does publishing order matter?
Search engines and readers both reward depth on one topic before breadth across many — publishing all the clusters under one pillar before starting the next demonstrates that depth faster than spreading posts thin across every pillar at once.
Can this work for a site that already has hundreds of posts?
Yes — give it a summarized content inventory (titles/topics) rather than every full post, and it will map existing coverage onto pillars/clusters and highlight where clusters are missing.
