Claude Free and Pro Limits: Five-Hour and Weekly Caps

A few long requests with large files can consume more capacity than many short text prompts. Claude displays a notice when the limit or context boundary is reached.
What does Pro provide?
Claude Pro costs $20 per month in the United States and provides at least five times the Free usage per session. It also includes priority access, Claude Code, Cowork, and earlier access to features.
The session allowance resets every five hours. Actual message count remains variable because Claude measures work rather than simple messages.
What is the Pro weekly limit?
Pro also has a weekly usage allowance across all models. Anthropic assigns each account a fixed reset day and time, shown in Settings → Usage.
A five-hour reset will not restore access if the weekly allowance has also been exhausted. Anthropic may also apply model, feature, weekly, or monthly capacity limits.
Do Claude and Claude Code share usage?

Pro and Max users can enable usage credits. Once included usage is exhausted, the user can continue at standard API rates if credits are enabled and funded.
Credits are charged separately from the subscription. Users can set monthly caps, prepay funds, enable auto-reload, and monitor consumption in Settings → Usage. The five-hour included limit still resets normally.
How can users conserve capacity?
Anthropic recommends starting fresh chats for new topics, batching related questions, avoiding repeated uploads, using project knowledge for recurring documents, removing unnecessary project content, and choosing efficient models when appropriate.
Cached project content and repeated prompts can reduce repeated processing, but every workflow should still be monitored through the Usage page.
